Contender peach is a great cold-hardy variety that can adapt to temperature falls below zero. It is developed in Raleigh, NC, is self-pollinating and a produces a bountiful crop each year. The skin is a red-orange color while the flesh is sweet and yellow. The flesh of the peach is firm and resists browning, and the freestone pit removes easily. Tolerant of late-spring frost, Contender is a good choice in growing zones where other peaches falter. The fruit ripens in mid to late August. The tree requires 1050 chill hours to produces fruit each year. At maturity, the Contender is approximately 10 ft.-15 ft. in height and width.
